BuenaSpace To Launch in Historic Downtown Wilmington
A new approach to doing well and doing good
Wilmington, NC – March 26, 2010 – Introducing BuenaSpace, a partnership between Buena Sustainable Communities and Digieffects, two Wilmington, North Carolina-based companies. BuenaSpace, located at 27 N. Front Street, Suite 200, a coworking space with a social conscience, is taking advantage of two trends sweeping the nation and world.
The first is the growing numbers of entrepreneurs, independent freelancers and telecommuting remote workers. As of November 2009, there were nine million self-employed workers in the U.S., according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. The number of workers telecommuting at least once a month for employers grew 17% between 2006 and 2008, to 33.7 million workers, according to WorldatWork, a human-resources research firm in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Traditionally, these workers had to either face isolation and domestic distraction at home, or brave the chaos, lack of privacy and dearth of electrical outlets at the local coffee shop. No longer. These workers can now experience the structure and community of a day job without having to invest in long-term leases, expensive equipment or office furniture. And they can still enjoy the freedom of being independent.
BuenaSpace will offer the following amenities for $150 per person, per month. The conference room can be rented for $50 per half day and the daily rate for a workspace is $25 (does not include access to conference room).

The second trend BuenaSpace is tapping into is the desire for people to do well financially and do good at the same time. In addition to creating one of the most dynamic work environments in Southeastern North Carolina, BuenaSpace is committed to being involved in fostering the "triple bottom line". Succinctly put, this means that companies who pay attention to their community and the environment will enjoy increased long-term, sustainable profits.
In adherence to these principles, BuenaSpace is embarking on a pro bono partnership with Leading Into New Communities, Inc. (LINC), a non-profit organization based in Wilmington, North Carolina. LINC provides shelter and services to men and women who have been released from local jails, state and/or federal prisons and on occasion young adults who have been released from detention centers. LINC also provides services to children who are at risk due to parental incarceration. Enhancing the effectiveness of LINC's services, enhances the livelihood of everyone in the community as it reduces crime. The average rate for prisoners returning to prison after being released (the revolving door) in the state of NC is 61%, yet for ex-offenders who go through LINC's program, the average rate of return is only 6.7%. This is an enormous benefit to the quality of life as well as the financial health of our community at large.
